Best argument against transphobia* ever? "Just because you hooked up with someone who used to be a child, doesn't make you a pedophile."
*Specifically, the shock/disgust displayed when people discover someone they're interested in is trans.

| Howie Day - Sound the Alarm |
[06 Jan 2010|10:42am] |
I was ready to write off Howie Day's new (well, "new" -- released 4 months ago) album as a collosal failure, but actually, it's been on my heavy rotation playlist for a few weeks now and I'm finding it not so bad. (What a ringing endorsement! Um.)
It's even more overproduced than Stop all the world now (*groan*) and almost unrecognizable from Australia (which I find raw and emotive and full of potential, sigh). On Sound the Alarm, it genuinely sounds like he is having problems with his voice -- which is kind of mind-blowing and sad, especially when I think of the decade-old live versions I have of his songs, where he is so on, both musically and emotionally. (His cover of '#41' still gives me chills, it's so good.)
For the most part, StA is subpar John Mayer -type stuff, which is nice and inoffensive enough -- but god, when I first started listening to Howie Day, 7(!) years ago, I was so swept away by his vocals and the emotion that he poured into his songs. It depresses me that those qualities have all but disappeared -- either because he wrecked his voice in some way or because he thought he could make more money as a John Mayer knock-off.
I was gonna upload some new songs ('So Stung' would actually be quite good, were it not for the fact that it sounds like he's singing "I'm so stoned"), but fuckit, I don't want to. Here are some old gems:
Howie Day - Morning After - One of my favourite songs ever. A perfect rock-tinged acoustic not-quite-love-song. Howie Day - #41 (Dave Matthews Band cover) - The awkward intro, where Howie says he learned this song because it was on the radio, completely belies what a great cover it is.

[06 Jan 2010|08:32am] |
I can tell already that the long lapse between episodes of Make It Or Break It airing and being captured/uploaded is going to be a source of SOUL-CRUSHING WOE for me in coming weeks.
Let's do a meme, shall we?
Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general.
Question can be as wacky as you want. Ask me about tv shows, characters, fanfic in general, fandom issues/meta, anything about any of my stories specifically. Whatever you want.

Stephen King stole the plot for his latest novel from The Simpsons Movie.
He really is a quality writer.

Chapati Mystery makes his Obligatory Avatar Post, linking Avatar and the Iraq War. Have you read good critical reviews? We'll probably go see it next weekend...

| Fic: Your place away from it all (Douglas Coupland's Generation X, Andy/Dag) |
[01 Jan 2010|10:09pm] |
For yuletide, I wrote Your place away from it all, a story about hoteliering (is that a word?) and art and love, set in the universe of Douglas Coupland's Generation X.
Since Coupland is my favourite author, it was a bit of an intimidating task. But, in the end, I just had fun with the characters, and I think it turned out okay.
Title Your place away from it all Author: iridescentglow Fandom: Douglas Coupland's Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture Pairing: Andy/Dag Rating: PG-13 Word count: 3,557
Summary: While working out how to run a hotel, Andy also has to figure out what his non-relationship with Dag means.

| drama on the GO |
[01 Jan 2010|08:40am] |
I went to the T-dot to go to Kelly's New Year's party tonight. I had to leave shortly after midnight, as the last train (free transit!) left at 1:13.
Naturally, it was packed. I managed to get a spot right by the door, against a wall, with a pole.
We have now set the scene.
After the train cleared out a bit, the drama started. Supposedly (I didn't notice this, but I got filled in later), this guy started insulting his girlfriend. After a while of it, a second guy stepped in and told him to stop. Naturally, this pissed him off, and he started to insult the guy, commenting on his dick size and calling him a faggot and other lovely colourful terms (...in front of a very young kid, by the way). He continued along this vein and then lunged at the guy. One of them punched the other.
At this point, the train was stopped at a station, and not moving because of the hubbub. The (people on the) train quite literally kicked the first guy off the train. He was drunk enough that he fell out.
When he got up, he continued to hurl the insults. (The GO cops were there by this point, preventing him from getting back on.) He attacked black people, gay people and women. I was banging my head against the pole.
His girlfriend was now beside him, defending him. She has issues.
The second guy was kicked off for a bit too, but people stood up for him and said the first guy was the instigator. So he was let back on. He proceeded to apologize to every person as they left the train at their stop.
According to later discussion, someone had a knife. I don't know if this is true. It didn't factor in during the very short fight.
The whole thing made the train half an hour late, but I guess I can't complain too much, as it was free.

| Ballsiest political moves of the 2000s (not all successful...) |
[31 Dec 2009|03:35pm] |
(Somewhat in order. I wanted to have 10 but I'm done at 8. Feel free to give more suggestions and I'll add the ones I like.)
1. The Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. 2. Benazir Bhutto coming back to Pakistan. 3. Prachanda taking on the Nepalese army, toppling the monarchy, then running for elections and becoming Nepal's Prime Minister. Whoa. (Started before 2000.) 4. Bush waging war on Iraq and somehow it not totally becoming another Viet Nam. 5. Stephen Colbert's speech at the 2006 Washington Correspondent's Dinner 6. Obama making a serious bid for the Democratic nomination which was Hillary R. Clinton's to lose, then going on to win the general election. 7. Stephen Harper trying to choke political funding to Canadian political parties. 8. The NDP extending a hand to the Liberals to form a coalition with the intent to topple Harper.

I'm gonna do the Fic In Review meme, even though I only wrote 5 fanfics this year. Whatever. I do memes when I need to decompress. It's a thing.

| people don't write the books I want to read, part 3,256 |
[30 Dec 2009|08:07pm] |
A couple of years ago, I thought to myself, 'incest is so popular in fandom, so there must be a niche for it in publishing, too -- I bet there are tons of incest-y novels I haven't read'. So I looked. And found NOTHING.
A year or so ago, I thought, 'America's Next Top Model is such effortless entertainment. I bet there are tons of novels about the modeling industry that are just as entertaining'. So I looked. And found Violet On the Runway. Which SUCKED. So I looked some more. And found NOTHING.
A week ago, I thought, 'elite gymnastics is craaaazy -- I can't wait to read all those great novels that must have been written about it!'
*WEEPz*
Dammit, I just want to read a great book about a model... who becomes a gymnast... while sleeping with her brother. Is that too much to ask??
Okay, I jest. But there really is a dearth of fiction (novels, movies) about gymnastics -- despite the fact that gymnastics is a really popular sport! WHY.
In my desperation, I have actually been driven to watch... *hides face in shame*... not one, but TWO tv movies from the 90s about gymnastics. Dear god, they were both terrible! Although, interestingly, 'Perfect Body' stars Brett Cullen, who also appears in... Make It Or Break It! The fictional gymnastics ouvre may be tiny, but it's incestuous.

| Skins s3 rewatch |
[30 Dec 2009|01:13pm] |
I've started a rewatch of s3 of Skins and I figured I'd blog it. But actually, it seems my thoughts now are almost exactly the same as they were a year ago (Cook is AWFUL in #3.02 -- crikey!), so who knows if it's worth following through with this?

| books meme |
[28 Dec 2009|01:40pm] |
I made out pretty well in the sales today. It is very nice to be able to buy beautifully-tailored trousers that are fully lined at a reasonable price... Wow, that was the most middle-aged statement I've ever made. I also bought a hooded sweater dress by Roxy! Okay, I'm back.
A books meme, stolen from aderyn:
